THE FISHING CLUB REPORT - MAY TO JULY 2022

Dear Members and Friends

Very little to report for the fishing club this quarter, as trips have been cancelled due to the very bad weather. Also, there have been delays in our new charter boat being launched due to a hold up with marine parts.

It should be good to go in May, we have been told. Our annual presentation night on 29 April saw the Keith Agget trophy for the biggest fish for the 2021 year awarded to Gary Lee for a 1.6kg flathead; and the L.J. Hayes trophy for the heaviest bag of fish for 2021 went to Sam Sundar with 31.5kg of cleaned fish.

THE FISHING CLUB REPORT - FEBRUARY TO APRIL 2022

Like all activities during 2021 being affected by Covid and lockdown, the fishing activities were also a casualty.

Five outings were cancelled out of a possible eleven, a big loss in time on the water. Our final trip for the year was on 8 November. With members feeling unwell, only eight attended. It was our first trip in four months and after the mandatory Covid checks were done by the skipper we were all okay and all good to go.

The early morning weather was not good but by midday, this had cleared to greet us with a nice sunny day and flat seas. A good day's fishing was had by all with 83 fish caught with a total weight of 34.9kg. Gary Lee had the biggest fish, a 1.6kg Flathead; terry Choy had the heaviest bag at 6.3kgs.The annual winners for 2021 were Gary Lee with the biggest fish with his 1.6kg Flathead, and Sam Sundar with the biggest bag at 31.5kgs.

The runners-up were Michael Cheng with 20.1kgs and Winnie Lo with 19.5kgs. The winning weights were half of last year's results, a 2.8kg Groper and a 64.1kg bag.

29 October 2021

Dear members and friends

This is what has been happening since our last magazine. Fishing over the past few months has had varying results. Our April outing had smooth seas and a fast drift resulting in 68 fish being caught weighting in at 32kg. Sam had the biggest bag of fish at 8.5kg and the biggest fish, a 0.92kg Rock Cod. The highlight of the day was when Winnie caught a 3kg plus Cuttle Fish. The results of the day were not great, with the largest fish being less than 1kg. Our May trip had good weather, so we went wide to the 50-fathom reef to target Snapper, but they weren’t biting. 94 fish were caught on the day weighing in at 40.1kg. Joseph was the first member to beat Sam this year with the heaviest bag of 7.1kg. Winnie had the biggest fish, a 1.27kg Flathead. Our June outing was a sad one as our charter boat, the Putney Star, has been sold by skipper, Robert Brown. We have been sailing on the Putney Star for the last 10 years.

Our replacement boat, Strikeback, is a smaller and faster charter boat organised by Sam as a replacement until Robert’s new and bigger boat comes online. In June the fishing on the day was poor with only 58 fish caught with a total weight of 25kg. Sam caught the biggest bag at 4.7kg and Michael the biggest fish, a 0.94kg Flathead. The only good thing on the day was the boat came with a deckhand to untangle the fishing lines and clean the fish (but not scaling).

The Fishing Club AGM returned the officers unopposed for the next 12 months. The Fishing Club organises monthly deep-sea charter boat fishing trips on the first Sunday of most months. All Ryde-Eastwood League Club members are welcome to join the outing as guest members.

The departure time is 5:00am and the arrival time is around 2:30pm. The boat is a 55-footer with toilet facilities and offers plenty of space on deck.

The drift fishing method is used. We usually catch morwong, leatherjacket, flathead, snapper, sweep and pigfish.
